SGT Jazmine Johnson

I’m proud to be from Chicago, Illinois, specifically the Bronzeville area. I joined the Illinois Army National Guard on March 23, 2018, when I was just 17 years old and a junior at Wendell Phillips High School through the Split Training Option (STO) program.

My decision to enlist was driven by opportunity and purpose. I wanted to be the first in my family to graduate from college, but I didn’t know how it would be financially possible. The Guard’s 100% college tuition made that dream achievable. Growing up in Chicago, I also saw the Guard as a path to avoid violence, drug use, and negative influences, while gaining discipline, stability, and financial independence. My uncle’s service inspired me, and I’m proud to be the first female in my family to join the military, setting a new standard for future generations.

Throughout my career, I’ve served as a Dental Specialist and Armor/Firearms Instructor, helping others develop essential skills and confidence in their abilities.

Recruiting Career

I became a Recruiter on February 6, 2024. Recruiting allows me to give back to the same community I grew up inand help others who are facing challenges similar to those I once did. It’s incredibly fulfilling to show people the positive side of military service—the benefits, the structure, and the life-changing opportunities that often go unnoticed because of misconceptions about the military.

The most rewarding part of my job is seeing my recruits’ lives transform—from the pride their parents feel to the personal growth and success each Soldier achieves after joining the Guard.

Civilian Life & Education

I’m a Dental Specialist and certified Firearms Instructor, dedicated to empowering others through self-defense and firearm safety classes in my community. I’m also an alumna of Eastern Illinois University and Wendell Phillips High School.

In my free time, I love to paint, draw, and do arts and crafts. I’m a proud Disney adult, and I find joy in creative expression, mentorship, and continuing to serve my community outside the uniform.

Message to Future Soldiers

I joined the Army National Guard to build a better future for myself while giving back to my community. This isn’t just a path or a calling—it’s a transformation. I look forward to helping you discover your own purpose and guiding you on your journey in the Guard.
